ABOUT OUR LOCAL, MAMA-OWNED

Asheville Flower Farm

How are local farm fresh flowers better than flowers in the grocery store?

Experiencing locally grown fresh flowers is completely different than the industrially-grown flowers grown hundreds of miles away. We are able to grow unique, heirloom varieties that do not stand up to shipping long distances. That means they come in more unique varieties of shapes, sizes and actually smell like nature intended them to, unlike most commercially-available flowers that only come in a few sturdy varieties that have had the aroma bred out of them. We handle our flowers with care every step of the way so they will stay looking good in a vase for a long time as long as you care for them properly (read on!).

What time of year are flowers available?

We work year-round to have flowers available for a longer season than what’s able to be typically grown in the field in our region. We have several large-scale high-tunnels and indoor propagation set-up and currently have fresh flowers available from the first of April until November. Starting around October, we’ll have dried flower wreaths available so you can enjoy our flowers all year round!

How should I care for my flowers once I get them home?

Properly caring for your flowers once you get them home can help them stay beautiful for as long as possible. Keep your flowers in a cool place and get them in water as soon as possible. First, unwrap your flowers and trim the bottoms of the stems with clean scissors (dirt and bacteria infiltrating the stems will make them wilt faster), making sure to trim off any leaves that would be below the water line. Place them in a clean vessel with fresh water and keep them out of direct sunlight, swapping out the water for fresh every 2 days to keep your blooms looking awesome!

Is Fiddlesticks Farm organic certified?

We aim to work with nature and our local ecosystem as much as possible, using all organic-approved products, no harmful chemicals or pesticides. As much as possible we build soil and conserve water by using cover crops and nutrient-cycling facilitated by our flock of chickens. However, the process of becoming organic certified is more expensive and prohibitive than would work for us, so we are not currently certified organic. We are Appalachian grown certified by ASAP and a member of the Specialty Cut Flower Association.

Can I come pick my own flowers?

We’re a very small farm without a ton of parking, so don’t have pick-your-own flowers as a standard offering. However, we can accommodate small groups by appointment, so please get in touch to schedule!

Where can I buy your flowers and produce?

There are lots of ways you can get our products! For flowers, you can find our pre-made bouquets in Asheville at Earthfare, Wholefoods on Merrimon and the French Broad Food Coop. We also provide bulk buckets of flowers for florists, designers or individuals–Check out more here (link). We can arrange for pick up on the farm or deliver locally for a small delivery fee. Most Saturdays from April-October we’re at the Black Mountain Farmer’s market selling our eggs and produce, including ginger and turmeric in the late summer-fall.

What produce do you grow?

We grow a select variety of vegetables and exotics that do well on our farm following our models of growing. Ginger and turmeric are our biggest crops besides flowers (it’s amazing that these exotic plants grow so well here in our mountains!). Depending on the time of year, we may also have tomatoes, eggplants, sweet peppers, cucumbers, and beets.

Tell me about your fresh eggs and hens!

We keep a flock of hens of many different breeds of chickens that do well free ranging in our climate. They always have access to large open areas to range in, getting a healthier diet of fresh greens and bugs and are able to engage in normal chicken behaviors like taking dust baths! They are fed a varied and nutrient-rich diet that is corn, soy and GMO free that we mix ourselves: Ancient grains, sunflower seeds, and nutrient rich kelp meal imbues our eggs with healthy omega fatty acids and micronutrients. Our eggs come in a rainbow of colors: many shades of brown, blue, green, cream, and even a few pink ones!
